چکیده

We present limits on the molecular gas content of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 5 from observations targeting redshifted CO(1–0) and CO(2–1) line emission. We observed a single field containing eight spectroscopically confirmed z ∼ 5 LBGs, seven of which are contained within a narrow (z = 4.95±0.08) redshift range and the eighth is at z = 5.2. No source was individually detected. Assuming the CO to H2 conversion factor for vigorous starbursts, we place upper limits on the molecular gas content of individual z ∼ 5 LBGs of M(H2) 1010 M . From a stacking analysis combining all of the non-detections, the typical z ∼ 5 LBG has an H2 mass limit comparable to their stellar mass, <3.1× 109 M . This limit implies that, given the star formation rates of these systems (measured from their UV emission), star formation could be sustained for at most ∼100 Myr, similar to the typical ages of their stellar populations. The lack of a substantially larger reservoir of cold gas argues against the LBGs being UV-luminous superstarbursts embedded in much larger UV-dark systems and as a result increases the likelihood that at least those LBGs with multiple components are starbursts triggered by mergers. The sources responsible for re-ionization are expected to be starbursts similar to these systems, but with lower luminosities, masses and consequently with star formation time-scales far shorter than the recombination time-scale. If so, the ionized bubbles expected in the IGM during the re-ionization era will only infrequently have UV-luminous sources at their

The Morphological Diversities among Star-forming Galaxies at High Redshifts in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey

We have used the deep, multi–wavelength images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to identify ∼ 4700 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at redshifts 2.5< z< 5, and 292 starburst galaxies at z ∼ 1.2. We present the results from a parametric analysis of the two-dimensional surface brightness profi...

1 2 A ug 2 00 9 Lyman Break Galaxies at z ∼ 5 : Rest - Frame UV Spectra . III 1

We present results of optical spectroscopic observations of candidates of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 5 in the region including the GOODS-N and the J0053+1234 region by using GMOS-N and GMOS-S, respectively. Among 25 candidates, five objects are identified to be at z ∼ 5 (two of them were already identified by an earlier study) and one object very close to the color-selection window turn...

Infrared Luminous Lyman Break Galaxies: A Population that Bridges LBGs and SCUBA Galaxies

A deep midand far-infrared survey in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) area gives 3.6 to 8μm flux densities or upper limits for 253 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). The LBGs are a diverse population but with properties correlated with luminosity. The LBGs show a factor of 30 range in indicated stellar mass and a factor of 10 in apparent dust content relative to stellar mass. About 5% of LBGs are lumin...

The evolution of Lyman-break galaxies in the cold dark matter model

We make a detailed investigation of the properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the CDM model. We present predictions for two published variants of the GALFORM semianalytical model: the Baugh et al. model, which has star formation at high redshifts dominated by merger-driven starbursts with a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF), and the Bower et al. (2006) model, which has active galacti...

Spitzer Observations of Z∼3 Lyman Break Galaxies: Stellar Masses and Mid-infrared Properties

We describe the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z∼3 using deep mid-infrared and optical observations of the Extended Groth Strip, obtained with IRAC and MIPS on board Spitzer and from the ground, respectively. We focus on LBGs with detections at all four IRAC bands, in particular the 26 galaxies with IRAC 8 μm band (rest–frame K-band) detections. We use st...
